A fox explorer stares out through a pair of round steampunk goggles, its mane rendered as an elaborate spread of interlocking Celtic knotwork rather than ordinary fur. A weathered green traveler’s coat and satchel strap complete the adventurer’s outfit.

About This Pattern

Named Rowan, this is the most technically ambitious piece in this batch — the goggle lenses alone use layered warm-to-cool shading to read as glass, and the knotwork mane is dense, deliberate linework rather than a repeating pattern. It suits a fantasy-decor collector, a Celtic-heritage gift, or simply the largest, most impressive piece in a themed gallery wall. It’s a natural pair with The Wee Celtic Druid and The Celtic Yuletide Robin if you’re building a full Celtic-inspired cluster. It’s also the biggest of the six patterns in our fox pattern round-up.

At 25,666 total stitches across a 224 x 240 grid, this is the widest pattern in the batch, and DMC 310 (Black) alone accounts for 5,627 stitches — more than a fifth of the design — doing the heavy work on the knotwork linework and goggle detailing. The five brown/beige shades used across the coat and fur (402, 839, 840, 3863, 06) transition gradually rather than in hard blocks, so this rewards patience with subtle shading over speed.

Tips for Stitching This Pattern

Complete the Celtic knotwork mane in one continuous session per knot loop rather than switching between loops — because the linework interlocks, jumping around increases the odds of connecting two loops that shouldn’t touch, which is far more noticeable on knotwork than it would be on an ordinary fur pattern. See our reading a cross-stitch chart guide for help tracking dense linework like this, or our framing your finished piece guide once you’re ready to display a project this size.
